| History | |
To help bridge the gap between the movies 'Ghostbusters' and 'Ghostbusters II' there was the cartoon series 'The Real Ghostbusters'. The name 'The Real Ghostbusters' arose due to a lawsuit by Filmation (who had owned the name Ghostbusters since the '70s when they had a live action show by that name). The cartoon and the subsequent line of toys changed their name to 'The Real Ghostbusters', since everyone felt that the movie and cartoon stars were the only Ghostbusters. Unfortunately the show lost popularity as more series were made and was eventually cancelled, although it ran from 1986-1991. In 1998, they tried to revive the line with a new show called 'Extreme Ghostbusters'. It was sort of a Ghostbusters: The Next Generation. Egon would return (though he now had a receeding hairline with a ponytail) to help train a new bunch of Ghostbusters. The new team consisted of Roland (an African American version of Egon); Kylie (a gothic chick who was dedicated to studying and exploring the supernatural); Eduardo (a Hispanic con artist type not unlike Peter back in the '80s) and Garrett (a wheelchair-bound daredevil who loved basketball). The new cartoon did not have the magic the first line did. There hadn't been a new film in over ten years and the old phrase "out of sight out of mind" seemed to explain why nobody got excited about the new cartoon. To fans of the first cartoon and team, there was really nothing new; it was just the same adventures with a new group. Fans were quick to spot who was the reissued Peter, the Egon, the Ray and the Winston from this new team, and after one year the toys and cartoon faded away. Interestingly enough, the final episode featured the first group teaming up with the new gang to stop some ghosts, and so ended Ghostbusters. |
